Landlord / Tenant Law
Subletting
A tenant renting out all or part of the premises they themselves are renting, to a third party, typically requiring the landlord's consent.
Most lease and rent agreements either prohibit subletting outright or require the landlord's prior written consent, since the landlord has a direct interest in knowing who is actually occupying their property.
Unauthorised subletting is a commonly cited ground for eviction in many rent control laws, since it is seen as a breach of the trust underlying the original tenancy.
