Suit for Declaration
A civil suit seeking a court's formal declaration of a legal right or status, without necessarily also asking for a specific consequential remedy.
A declaratory suit is used where a person's legal right or status is being denied or is in dispute, and they want the court to formally confirm it — for instance, a declaration of ownership over disputed property — which can then be relied on in future dealings.
Where consequential relief (like possession) is also available and not sought along with the declaration, courts may require it to be claimed together, rather than in a separate later suit.
