Territorial Jurisdiction

A suit generally has to be filed in a court within whose territorial limits the defendant resides, carries on business, or the cause of action wholly or partly arose — filing in the wrong territorial jurisdiction can result in the case being returned or transferred.

Contracts sometimes specify an agreed jurisdiction for any future disputes, which courts generally respect as long as it is one of the jurisdictions that would otherwise have been legally competent to hear the matter.
