Civil Law
Written Statement
The defendant's formal written reply to a plaint, admitting or denying the plaintiff's allegations and raising any defences.
The written statement is the defendant's opportunity to respond point by point to the plaint — admitting facts that are true, denying those that are disputed, and setting out any additional defences or counter-claims.
Courts generally require a written statement to be filed within a specified period, and failing to specifically deny an allegation can, in some circumstances, be treated as an admission of that fact.
