Alimony
Financial support one spouse pays the other after separation or divorce, meant to help the recipient maintain a reasonable standard of living.
Alimony (also called maintenance) can be ordered as a one-time lump sum or periodic payments, and courts decide the amount based on factors like each spouse's income and assets, the standard of living during the marriage, and the recipient's reasonable needs.
It can be claimed both during the pendency of proceedings (interim maintenance) and as a final award once the case is decided.
