Annulment
A court decree declaring a marriage null and void, treating it as though it never legally existed, rather than dissolving an otherwise valid marriage.
An annulment is conceptually different from a divorce — a divorce ends a valid marriage, while an annulment is a declaration that the marriage was defective from the start (whether void or voidable) and is therefore of no legal effect.
Because it can affect issues like inheritance, legitimacy of children, and remarriage differently from a divorce, courts require specific grounds and evidence before granting one.
