The offence and civil wrong of marrying again while a previous, legally valid marriage is still subsisting.
Marrying a second time while still validly married to someone else is both a criminal offence and renders the second marriage void from the outset, since a person cannot have two subsisting valid marriages under most personal law systems in India.
The first spouse can pursue both a criminal complaint against the errant spouse and separately seek matrimonial remedies like divorce or judicial separation.
