Consumer Protection Act 2019
The current comprehensive law governing consumer rights and grievance redress in India, replacing the earlier 1986 legislation.
This law modernised consumer protection considerably — introducing product liability, addressing e-commerce and unfair contracts specifically, and setting up a dedicated Central Consumer Protection Authority with powers to act against unfair practices even without an individual complaint.
It also revised the pecuniary jurisdiction thresholds and streamlined the complaint process across District, State, and National Commissions.
