Judicial Separation

A court order allowing spouses to live apart without formally dissolving the marriage, often used as an interim step or cooling-off arrangement.

Judicial separation suspends the obligation of spouses to cohabit, without ending the marriage itself — the parties remain legally married and cannot remarry, but are relieved of the duty to live together.

It is sometimes sought as a precursor to divorce, or by a spouse who wants formal recognition of the separation without yet pursuing a full and final divorce.
